After a busy five months of non-stop basketball, I’ll bookend this season similarly to how I started it, by assigning rankings to 362 teams. In an attempt to achieve greater consistency year over year with my rankings, this year's rankings will be more calculated. By assigning values to several end-of-the-year criteria, this approach provides a more objective assessment of our teams. Having consistent variables from one ranking cycle to the next will make it easier to identify any oversights.
For my 2024 end-of-season rankings, I will consider similar variables as in the previous three rankings, including roster potential, regular season performance, postseason performance, and level of competition. Directly assigning numerical values to these variables, rather than evaluating them qualitatively, will help minimize blind spots. These rankings are going to act as a baseline for my rankings in the future.
I’ve included an appendix before the actual rankings (and words). This appendix contains a link to uninterrupted rankings, a recap of the conference victors from the start of the season, an image displaying the rankings (and their history), as well as the top 20 teams based on the average.
I’m excited about expanding upon my system in the future. I'm aiming to release the 2025 preseason rankings in early October 2024.
Have you ever shot that shot?

Absolutely, every team deserves recognition for their efforts, even when they face significant challenges. Mississippi Valley State's victory, although it came late in the season, is indeed worth celebrating. Their ability to rely on defense and force turnovers shows resilience and determination, qualities that can be built upon for future success. It's important to acknowledge and applaud the hard work and achievements of all teams, regardless of their position in the rankings.

Robert McCullum has faced challenges since the departure of MJ Randolph, particularly in crafting effective offenses without a clear go-to scorer. While K'Jei Parker faced efficiency issues, especially considering his underclassman status, it's worth noting that players like Randolph were not initially known for their efficiency either. This suggests that Parker could be a valuable long-term investment despite his current challenges.

While the Big East was competitive this past season, and playing 20 conference games might have been more than the usual 18 in many conferences, winning just three games cannot solely be attributed to a tough draw against conference opponents. Notably, one of these three victories was against Louisville, another high-major program facing challenges. This outcome underscores a disappointing season that shouldn't be typical for a Big East program.

MTSU stands out as one of the few teams capable of maintaining their momentum from the end of the regular season into the conference tournament. This success is partly attributed to the emergence of Tre Green, who has contributed to the Blue Raiders' improved spacing. With five wins in their final eight games, their upset victory over top-seeded Louisiana Tech made waves in the C-USA tournament. Ultimately, it was Western Kentucky who secured the auto bid after defeating MTSU in the tournament.

For the past few years, Musselman's teams have been ranked in my top ten in the preseason, but this year they didn't even have a strong showing in the tournament to make up for a disappointing regular season. The Razorbacks weren't even close to being on the bubble by the end of the season. It was clear that this roster simply didn't mesh well together, leading to a lack of defense that had been a strength in previous years, and they struggled with their three-point shooting, which is becoming a pattern.

Big Ten (#2 in Conference)
Record: 29-9
Their best tournament run since losing in the National Championship game nearly two decades prior, the Illini outperformed their seed line. However, their season coming to a close in the Elite Eight with a 0-30 run against UConn was not indicative of their overall season success.
