Ranking the 362 D1 Men's Basketball Teams After the 2023-24 Season
Humbling myself.
After a busy five months of non-stop basketball, I’ll bookend this season similarly to how I started it, by assigning rankings to 362 teams. In an attempt to achieve greater consistency year over year with my rankings, this year's rankings will be more calculated. By assigning values to several end-of-the-year criteria, this approach provides a more objective assessment of our teams. Having consistent variables from one ranking cycle to the next will make it easier to identify any oversights.
For my 2024 end-of-season rankings, I will consider similar variables as in the previous three rankings, including roster potential, regular season performance, postseason performance, and level of competition. Directly assigning numerical values to these variables, rather than evaluating them qualitatively, will help minimize blind spots. These rankings are going to act as a baseline for my rankings in the future.
I’ve included an appendix before the actual rankings (and words). This appendix contains a link to uninterrupted rankings, a recap of the conference victors from the start of the season, an image displaying the rankings (and their history), as well as the top 20 teams based on the average.
I’m excited about expanding upon my system in the future. I'm aiming to release the 2025 preseason rankings in early October 2024.

Mississippi Valley State's victory, although it came late in the season, is indeed worth celebrating. Their ability to rely on defense and force turnovers shows resilience and determination, qualities that can be built upon for future success. It's important to acknowledge and applaud the hard work and achievements of all teams, regardless of their position in the rankings.

Robert McCullum has faced challenges since the departure of MJ Randolph, particularly in crafting effective offenses without a clear go-to scorer. After securing the conference's automatic bid the previous season, this year's Redhawks underwent a significant transition with a younger roster, resulting in less competitiveness in the OVC. One of the standout performers this season for Brad Korn was Rob Martin, who effectively filled the role previously held by Phillip Russell. Despite being a sub-six-foot guard, Martin emerged as the go-to scorer in Korn's offensive scheme.

Joe Octave had a bit of a revenge game, showing his prowess by delivering one of his best performances of the season against Army, scoring 28 points on just 14 shots. Although Octave hadn't played for Army before, he spent his first two years of college at Air Force, meaning the military-industrial complex might have added some extra motivation to the matchup.

Jordan Johnson has showcased some of the most dramatic shooting swings since we transitioned between empty and full stadiums during the pandemic. After sinking 48% of his threes on nearly 200 attempts this past year, Johnson increased his three-point attempts, though his accuracy dropped to just 32% from outside.

The highlight of Bellarmine's season was their victory over Kennesaw State at the KSU Convocation Center, a high-paced game where both teams scored over 90 points.

Finishing as the worst team in my rankings at the end of the previous season, achieving seven wins, including six in conference play, certainly exceeded expectations. The contributions of Terell and Tai Strickland undoubtedly aided their father in this improvement, and competing in the NEC, especially in recent times, offers a wide-open field for opportunities.

Despite enduring a 13-game losing streak in the middle of their season, the Pirates managed to surpass my bottom-five projection for them at the beginning of the season. This turnaround was largely attributed to Kyrese Mullen emerging as a viable option as a stretch big, which significantly expanded their offensive capabilities and bodes well for Hampton's prospects in the CAA.

Antoine Pettway guided the fastest-paced offense in the country this past season, which naturally led to a volatile performance. Initially showing promise with a 12-5 start (including 3-0 in conference play), it seemed like the Owls were on track for consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. However, they faltered down the stretch, managing to win only three of their final fourteen games.

While it's unrealistic to expect an immediate turnaround for a program in their situation, hopefully, this season provided a foundation to build upon for Chicago State.

Shane Burcar has experienced disappointment over the past four regular seasons. Following a surprise run to the Big Sky conference championship game in 2023, there were hopes for building upon that success in the following season. However, this past season did not meet those expectations. The Lumberjacks lacked the returning talent and experience necessary to replicate the success of Burcar's first season in Flagstaff.

Nico Galette had a disappointing season due to battling injuries and inefficiency, preventing him from reaching the level expected of him as one of the better players in the NEC. The team's approach shifted this past season, with improved shooting and a focus on utilizing role players rather than being solely Galette-centric as in years past. This marked a unique pivot for coach Anthony Latina, and in turn a player who has been with the program for four seasons. However, despite Galette's challenges, it was the most successful season the Pioneers have experienced in his four seasons in Fairfield.

Most coaches have a clear understanding of the teams they need to beat within their conference to achieve their desired position. For Brett Reed and Lehigh in the Patriot League, one such team is Colgate, a perennial contender. This year was no different as they faced Colgate three times. Despite two close losses during the regular season, their third encounter for an NCAA tournament spot proved to be the least competitive. Looking ahead, it's evident that Colgate will remain a key target for Reed and Lehigh in the upcoming season.

Tommy Bruner stepped into the role of a high-level scorer for a Summit League program, taking over from Max Abmas, who suited up this past year for the Longhorns. While Abmas played on several competitive teams at Oral Roberts, Bruner's 534 shot attempts this past season were more out of necessity. Without his offensive contributions, the Pioneers might have had one of the uglier average margins of outcomes in the country, given that defense seemed optional at times.

The Aggies have experienced a significant decline, although expecting any coach to replicate the successes of the Menzies or Jans era would be unreasonable. After the tumultuous tenure of Heiar as head coach, Jason Hooten found himself with a monumental task. His team transitioned from the WAC to CUSA, and he had to replace every single player who had played minutes in the previous season. Recognizing this as a multi-year rebuilding process should alleviate some of the job pressure on Hooten.

Competing in a conference that has been a landing spot for newly established D1 teams (known colloquially as NEC-West), the OVC has been home to SIUE for twelve years. Despite not reaching 20 wins in D1, the program is not lacking in talent, with players like Damarco Minor, who plays a crucial role as an offensive contributor. Minor has taken an impressive 763 shots over the past two seasons.

This showcases the uniqueness of the tournament each year, as this team needed just one more win (competing in the First Four) than UConn to potentially win the National Championship.

For the past few years, Musselman's teams have been ranked in my top ten in the preseason, but this year they didn't even have a strong showing in the tournament to make up for a disappointing regular season. The Razorbacks weren't even close to being on the bubble by the end of the season. It was clear that this roster simply didn't mesh well together, leading to a lack of defense that had been a strength in previous years, and they struggled with their three-point shooting, which is becoming a pattern.

Colorado could be considered one of the most entertaining teams based on the competitiveness of their games in the tournament. They stayed competitive with Marquette for most of their second-round matchup, which validated my view of them as a Final Four sleeper at the start of the season. With lesser opponents in North Carolina State and Duke ahead, the Golden Eagles were likely their most formidable challenge until a potential matchup against Purdue in Glendale.

The Tar Heels reached their potential as a one seed a year after it might have been expected, but they were unable to recapture their tournament magic from two years prior. However, being the outright regular-season champions is an impressive turnaround for Hubert Davis in his third year.

Powered by the best offense they've had in the Otz era, the Cyclones won the Big 12 tournament and made a run into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. While they couldn't keep up with Terrence Shannon Jr. in the Sweet 16, their impressive performance against the best conference competition in the country highlights a very strong overall season.
3. Purdue - National Runner-Up

The Boilermakers backed up their strong seeding with a deep Tournament run, exorcising their past demons by reaching the Final Four. Although Edey didn't reach his true peak, this wasn't a bad way for him to complete his college career.
2. Houston - Lost in Sweet 16 to Duke

Record: 32-5
An injury to All-American Jamal Shead in the Sweet 16 dampened Houston's fantastic season. It's likely that had he remained healthy, the Cougars would have had an easy path to the Final Four, with North Carolina State as their subsequent matchup in the Elite Eight.
