I have been employed as a data analyst in a conventional 9-5 position for one and a half years following my graduation from college in May 2022. Like many individuals, I have invested a significant portion of my identity and self-worth in what ultimately amounts to just a job. However, over the past year, this particular project, along with my engagement in Substack as a whole, has afforded me a newfound sense of purpose. It has become evident that my greatest sense of productivity, pride, or fulfillment is when writing for the Substack, even if for no one but myself.

The end of the Juan Dixon era came after just one double-digit win season and a single year above .500 in conference play. The Eagles excelled in shooting and scoring, thanks to high-volume shooter Kam'ron Cunningham, who is set to return. However, the team faces a significant overhaul, needing to replace five starters through low-usage transfers, JUCO recruits, and freshmen. Larry Stewart's first year as head coach promises significant changes compared to Dixon's last season, with the exception of the expected win total.

However, the absence of an apparent successor for Massner raises concerns. Forrest, one of the two seniors on the roster, is expected to be the most productive player for a team that has faced challenges since the initial success of Nathan Davis' tenure. While the Bison may not return to their 20-win form this year, they aim for gradual improvement and building a strong team culture under John Griffin.

A team which has had plenty of regular season success lately, but one that hasn’t been able to convert that into progress in the regular season, with Sean Woods being let go despite not lacking the ability to put up a good conference win total year after year. Kevin Johnson will look to guide the Jaguars to their first conference appearance in a decade. This is done mainly through bringing in transfers, such as Brandon Davis, Derrick Tezeno, Tai'Reon Joseph, all players who played a limited role at their previous schools, all successful programs. Jordan Johnson’s contributions as a shooter should be among the most appreciated, a high volume shooter joining the program by way of the Southland who’ll hope for immediate eligibility.

Ford’s 2024 is made better by the return of a couple of key pieces, including seven-footer Keenan Fitzmorris whose increased three-point volume paired with interior defense is to say the very least, intriguing. Following two top 50 block rate seasons from the eventual Raptor Mouhamadou Gueye, Fitzmorris, though possessing a very different game, will look live up to his predecessors.

A win over Grand Canyon was among the better parts of a season that the Vaqueros were expected to be the team beat up on both by their conference and non-con opponents, but 15 wins proved many incorrect. Despite having some success to carry over from 2023, they’ll once again lack roster continuity to build towards a 20 win campaign, having to piece things together from understated returners and disgruntled transfers. DeAnthony Tipler is on his fourth program in five years, and while his passing and shooting are both positives, the lack of players who’ll produce for several seasons is lacking from this program.

Approaching a decade since Tommy Amaker's legendary 27-win team, the Crimson have faced challenging times with two consecutive five-win conference seasons. For 2024, Amaker leads the youngest team in the Ivy League, with senior Justice Ajogbor being the most recognizable returning player. Shooting improvement is a priority, as Harvard has been outside the top 150 in three-point shooting since 2019.

The Lions have consistently been a competitive team in the Southland over the past couple of decades, despite having only one tournament appearance since joining the conference 25 years ago. Over the last two seasons, they have achieved six seasons with 18 or more wins. Their recent success has been fueled by perimeter shooting, with a top-50 finish in this area during the previous season. The return of Roger McFarlane and Nick Caldwell, two proficient wings, should contribute to regular-season success, but their ultimate goal lies in making a deeper run in March.

Darrin Horn, despite once leading a team with a top ten tempo during his first year as a head coach in South Carolina, transitioned to a slower pace, ranking in the bottom 10 in tempo in 2023. While the Gamecocks had one more win than the Norse, it was the Norse who secured a tournament berth. Senior guard Marques Warrick's return may give Northern Kentucky an opportunity for another tournament appearance. Shooting becomes crucial for slow-paced teams in end-of-the-clock scenarios, and the team, which ranked mid-pack in perimeter shooting the previous year, looks to Sam Vinson for increased high-volume shooting.

Coming off of likely their best season in program history, including two wins over high major programs, there is an expectation that this won’t remain the case for long. Jalen Blackmon was one of the most efficient combo guards in the conference as an underclassmen, and his return could mean great things, with his improving outside shooting and pairing next to a true lead guard in Stephan Swenson. Though their offense is much more impressive than their defense, another year of Josh Smith’s interior presence should improve this end of the ball.

Malevy Leons played really well next to Rienk Mast in the front court this past season, and with the latter now a Cornhusker, Darius Hannah will look to take his role as a second twin tower. Regardless of who is running the four or five, this is a team that is going to be built around rim protection and a very efficient offense. Duke Deen, a foot shorter than the aforementioned two, is a talented shooter who looked good in his first year with the program. Emarion Ellis is a wing with some ball-handling abilities who transferred via Marquette. One thing can be sure, Brian Wardle will make the most of his size.

His continued performance will help maintain one of the most formidable defensive units in the country. Even after losing Darius McGhee, undoubtedly the best player in program history to eligibility, the Flames are set for another year competing in their conference, this year in the C-USA, moving on up through the recent success of McKay. By returning their team outside of McGhee, Colin Porter will look to overtake the lead ball handler role, while Kyle Rode is one of the best forwards in the C-USA regardless of his conference alignment.

It was an inconsistent first year for Chris Gerlufsen with some positives and negatives, highlighted by consecutive games in December- losing to an 11 win WAC team at home in UTA, followed by beating Arizona State, which won a game in the tournament. A major contributor from the previous year, Marcus Williams, who filled a role more as an off-ball guard with some playmaking abilities rather than the lead guard for the Dons should likely propel them to more highs, as the 30-point win over the Sun Devils. Mike Sharavjamts is a fascinating transfer who’ll provide some spacing and isolation scoring from the wing.

In November 2021, the expectation was that Jim Larrañaga, given his age, was heading into a lame-duck year, likely his final as a head coach, following a few seasons of mediocrity. With two deep tournament runs in consecutive years, the end for Jim in Miami is far off. Leonard Hamilton might have similar expectations at Florida State, after a Sweet 16 run in 2021, it has been bad years back to back, making this very possibly his last year as a head coach, or, if he can turn it around, where the 75-year-old gets his second wind.

Noah Thomasson, transferring from the MAAC, was one of the best guards on the East Coast, with abilities as both a self creator and passer. The upcoming season for the Musketeers cannot be mentioned without the injuries of Jerome Hunter and Zach Freemantle, two big pieces from their Sweet 16 run, Freemantle being out since January 2023. Replacing injuries known to be long-term in later in the offseason, rather than having time to replace that player’s production in the portal will lead to some underpreparedness going into the season for Sean Miller, and understandably so. Soulely Boum was understood to not be an option in 2024, thus another wing transfer from the state of Texas, Quincy Olivari was found early in the offseason, but the production of the later-deemed long-term injuries, couldn’t be as easily done.

Sharpshooter Baylor Scheierman didn’t have the efficiency of the previous two seasons, but with some deeper shots and a few more off the dribble, in addition to 100 more than his junior year.

A combination of talented returners, intriguing transfers, and one of the country's highest-rated prospects positions Buffalo as a potential sleeper for the Final Four. Cody Williams, a projected lottery pick, promises athleticism and scoring, particularly as a cutter, with defensive potential attributed to his length and mobility. Eddie Lampkin Jr., a traditional big man, excels in rebounding but lacks rim protection, a potential concern for Tad Boyle's squad.

A team known for its consistent performance under Randy Bennett elevated its game to greatness in the past year, securing 27 wins, including a victory over Gonzaga. Key returners like Aidan Mahaney, who displayed remarkable shot-making abilities as a freshman, are poised to compete for another conference title. The Gaels boast talented players like Alex Ducas, a wing close to a 50/40/90 shooting profile, and Mitchell Saxen, who excels in rebounding. Luke Barrett, in his senior year, may emerge as a shooter, adding more depth to the forward rotation.

Tom Izzo's Spartans made a significant impact in the tournament, highlighting their potential. Backcourt continuity with players like Jaden Akins and Tyson Walker enhances their shooting abilities. The addition of five-star Xavier Booker strengthens their roster, and Malik Hall's return provides reliability in the forward position.

Late in the season, an injury to Jaylen Clark and a heroic shot from Julian Strawther curtailed the Bruins' tournament run, preventing them from advancing further. With the core of their Final Four team now gone, a new era under Mick Cronin begins, featuring several freshmen alongside familiar faces. Adem Bona demonstrated defensive prowess but lacked offensive creation abilities. Dylan Andrews, although not a major contributor as a freshman, stands to benefit from the vacant backcourt positions.

While there were some notable achievements in the previous year, such as the Razorbacks' victory over top-seeded Kansas in the second round of the tournament, their season was marred by injuries and a lack of roster consistency. This led to disappointment relative to their top-three preseason ranking in November. Although there are promising additions to the roster via the transfer portal, Eric Musselman isn't bringing in a top-rated prospect. Trevon Brazile, a stretch four, was sorely missed, and he is expected to provide valuable shooting for a team that ranked in the bottom 50 in the country in that department.

Despite being projected as a mid-tier, NIT-level team, winning the National Championship shouldn’t have been a surprise with how good of a team the Huskies were in December. With offseasons of obsessing over Donovan Clingan’s per-36 statistics, they are expected to be a high-level team once again. Though their depth took a hit originally, Stephon Castle is a five-star recruit with good size, providing both scoring abilities and passing.

The Blue Devils are in a position they aren’t too familiar with, returning a good portion of their scoring from the previous year, rather than having to replace all of their starting five. Kyle Filipowski’s decision to return for a second season in college when he could’ve been a top 40 pick will be recalled for a long time, especially if this team is able to have the success his return would entail, though this team’s best player could be a fully-healthy Jeremy Roach.

After appearing as one of the top teams in the country from December onward and receiving attention as a dark horse for a deep tournament run, the Aggies faced an early exit in the tournament. Tyrece Radford and Wade Taylor formed one of the nation's best backcourts, and their return positions the Aggies at the forefront of the SEC. Addressing the issue of early losses will be crucial, but the roster's continuity should prevent a similar uphill battle to secure a tournament spot.

Despite winning both Big East titles, and having the Big East Player of the Year return, the Golden Eagles are likely a team that won’t be remembered in the grand scheme of things. Both are being overshadowed by several teams in their conference come March, as well as being projected to miss the tournament altogether in November. With their only notable loss being O-Max Prosper, and returning Tyler Kolek, conference player of the year, expecting Shaka Smart to have another top-two seed in the tournament would be at the very least an expectation. An elite team the previous year, not much would prevent the Golden Eagles from being even better.

Between November and March, Purdue was undoubtedly the best team in the country, despite playing both in the Big Ten and a competitive non-conference schedule, the Boilermakers never faltered from ranking as among the best teams in the country. With the overstated nature of their embarrassing first-round loss aside, there’s not much preventing this team from doing the same thing again, largely due to their roster continuity, and reliance on sophomores in their backcourt, instead of freshmen.
